Hosted in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), MoCoTokyo featured 15 speakers from 10 leading global organizations and was attended by 156 individuals from 73 organizations worldwide. This event marked a significant step forward in supporting the vital work being done within MOBI’s Working Groups and accelerating Web3 implementation for cross-industry interoperability. Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to advance as a community towards a more secure, efficient, equitable, decentralized, and sustainable digital economy. In the face of escalating environmental challenges, industry leaders worldwide confront an urgent mandate: to slash emissions and curtail environmental impact in their business processes and value chains. This imperative comes amid a growing demand for a circular economy—a sustainability-first paradigm rooted in reuse and waste reduction. Modern supply chains pose a formidable challenge. These networks, often comprising hundreds or thousands of stakeholders, operate within fragmented silos, hindering the scalability of shared solutions. Enterprises today seek innovative solutions to bridge these gaps. Yet, current centralized/Web2 systems prove inadequate in fostering the interoperability needed for a successful transition.

This is where the transformative potential of Web3 technology comes into play. Leveraging shared standards in a privacy-preserving Web3 framework, industry players can unlock trusted identities and verifiable transactions for cross-industry interoperability, ensuring that data moves seamlessly between verifiable sources and intended recipients for end-to-end permissioned traceability.

Why Web3 Implementation for the GBP?

  • Reduces the cost of trust & data sharing between intended recipients.

  • Facilitates standardized and verifiable access and coordination between disparate organizations. 

  • Enables selective disclosure, giving entities the ability to share/not share data as needed (data sovereignty).

  • Ensures permissioned traceability of tamper-evident battery data at scale

  • Unlocks easy horizontal expansion, enabling the seamless  addition of new use cases and stakeholders.

Through initiatives like the Global Battery Passport (GBP), MOBI and its members seek to catalyze a Web3-enabled circular economy in value chains worldwide. On 19 February 2024, MOBI hosted MoCoTokyo in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), offering a one-of-a-kind colloquium for industry leaders to network, share solutions, and collectively explore critical challenges and opportunities at the forefront of the circular economy transition. Batteries are the key to unlocking the energy transition. At the same time, batteries are material- and resource-intensive with inevitable social and environmental impacts throughout the value chain. As battery usage proliferates across industries, global regulations emphasize the need for a standardized traceability framework to promote circularity, efficiency, and resilience in the battery supply chain. Worldwide, policies like the EU Battery Regulation, the US Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, and CARB regulations mandate digital recordkeeping to meticulously track battery lifecycles and verify domestic contents, underscoring the growing necessity for a digital “battery passport” — a comprehensive record that tracks a battery’s journey from production to disposal.

We’re partnering with DENSO to host an in-person workshop of the Circular Economy and the Global Battery Passport (CE-GBP) Working Group in Tokyo! This pivotal meeting brings together member companies, united in their commitment to advancing the global battery industry through a cutting-edge Web3 decentralized, interoperable solution for the Global Battery Passport (GBP). This innovative approach is key to driving circularity and sustainable transformation within the industry.

Objective:

Our primary goal is to strategize and refine the roadmap for the successful implementation of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for the GBP. Phase I is projected to complete by the end of 2024. This initiative represents a major step forward in aligning the battery sector with sustainability and circularity. This workshop will serve as an open forum for members to:

  • Review the current progress of the CE-GBP Working Group and outline key milestones and strategies for upcoming phases.
  • Discuss potential future challenges for the MVP, address concerns and potential obstacles, and brainstorm Web3 solutions for the GBP.
  • Explore how our collective efforts can guide the industry toward compliance with evolving regulations through the creation of guidelines, technical standards, and necessary infrastructure.
